Abstract

COVID-19 has emerged as a global catastrophe, causing substantial repercussions worldwide, particularly in developing countries. This study aims to investigate the consequences of the COVID-19-induced lockdown on vulnerable rural communities in the Kushtia district of Bangladesh, with a specific focus on their coping strategies. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzed data from 48 in-depth interviews, 4 focus group discussions (FGDs), and 14 key informant interviews (KIIs) through thematic analysis. The study reveals that rural communities in the Kushtia district experienced significant impacts due to the COVID-19-induced lockdown, including economic, food, health, and educational repercussions. Additionally, the situation has deteriorated over time due to the ongoing transmission of COVID-19. The study also uncovered various coping strategies employed by these rural communities, such as borrowing money and food, utilizing savings, selling and mortgaging assets, and reducing meals and expenses. The study recommends prioritizing economic aid and enhancing food distribution systems to alleviate financial strain and food insecurity, while advocating for scalable health and education interventions to build resilience against future crises.
