Abstract

The environmental concerns raise issues like non-biodegradable nature of petrochem–based food packaging materials and consumer demands to have better packaging materials and raise the need to develop biodegradable materials for various applications. The natural biopolymers can fulfill the requirements of consumers. There has been a growing interest of world toward bio-polymeric materials, due to exhaustive nature of fossils. Although natural polymers possess shortcomings like poor mechanical strength and reproducibility related issues, the use of nanotechnology in their production can abolish all the issues. The bio-polymeric nanocomposites have shown excellent mechanical and water retention properties and decreased gaseous exchange as well as intelligent systems with nanosensors properties help in tracking the condition of packed food. Moreover, the active moieties can also be incorporated to it to impart desired functional properties such as anti-microbial antioxidant, biological, and biocatalyst properties. This chapter showcases deep review of various natural biopolymers which can be used for nanotechnology with anti-microbial properties for food packing applications.
