Abstract

Now, almost all the fake news is spread on social media. As there is no proper fact-checking system, perpetrators target the social media platforms especially on Facebook, Twitter, to spread fake news. Besides, the filter bubble of social media platforms is no longer effective to find out or detect any false news. Some fact-checking institutes have sprung up in different countries and which are trying to fight against false news but these are not enough in comparison to the scale of fake news spread on social media. Some developed countries in Asia including Singapore have developed such tools and take some steps to control the spread of news. Besides, many countries––Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Cambodia, and the Philippines have formulated different legal frameworks in the hope of checking fake news and harassment on social media. But sometimes those laws are misused by the authorities concerned to implement their political agenda and gagging the public opinion criticizing the authorities’ misrule and punishing the individual under the laws for being critical against them. Despite those attempts at fact-checking, fake news is still dominating the social media due to low implementation and incapacity of the tools and steps. With the limited and inadequate steps, it is almost impossible to check the millions of fake news generated regularly on the giant social media platforms across the globe. This chapter tries to understand the issues of misinformation on social media and how different countries are dealing with the issues, especially in the Asian region. The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate the features of misinformation on social media. In addition to this, it highlights the typology of this misinformation, the most significant misinformation, and the chronology of the developments. In the chapter, the beliefs in the mistreatment in the daily life of people in Asian countries in the context of the current reality; the prevailing misinformation, superstition about public health, and wrong practices have also been reflected. Also, the issues of correcting misinformation and getting true health information have been mentioned. © 2022 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
