The construction industry is currently experiencing a major shift toward Industry 4.0. Despite this transformation, it still lags behind other industries, prompting a need for rapid and smooth digital adoption. Digital leadership poses as a promising solution to this challenge. However, there is still a lack of understanding about the competencies required for effective digital leadership in the construction industry. Therefore, this study aims to identify the core competencies for effective digital leadership among construction industry professionals. To accomplish this objective, data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 industry professionals, and the collected information was analyzed using thematic analysis. The results revealed that effective digital leadership requires a range of core competencies, including software proficiency, strategic thinking, leadership and teamwork, adaptability, technological education and training, communication, knowledge of construction processes, standards, and regulations. These findings have extended the body of knowledge on digital leadership with a specific focus on the construction industry. Practically, the outcome of these findings may serve as a guide for construction industry practitioners and organizations in developing effective digital leadership for project success.
