Abstract

The study focuses on the challenges, stress, and coping strategies associated with transnational irregular (undocumented) labor migration originating from Bangladesh. Using qualitative research, 25 in-depth interviews were conducted and analyzed through deductive and inductive thematic analysis with Nvivo- 12 software and the Granheim method. The study's findings indicate three themes including difficulties, stress, and coping strategies. The irregular labour migrants face some difficulties including insecurity, harassment, discrimination, and barriers to accessing health care. In addition, respondents disclosed various forms of stress at the workplace encompassing bullying, workload, low paid, fear of police, and cultural stress like amnesia and food and religious shock. To manage these challenges, individuals adopt coping mechanisms like utilizing social media, watching movies and funny videos, talking with family, playing mobile games, self-business, and resorting to prayer. This research not only amplifies the voices of a marginalized population but also provides empirical evidence to inform evidence-based policymaking. It serves as a foundation for advocating for the rights and well-being of irregular labor migrants and contributes to creating more equitable and just societies, both in Bangladesh and globally. The results can guide governments, NGOs, and policymakers in developing strategies and initiatives to support vulnerable undocumented migrant workers.
