Microplastics (MPs) are present in terrestrial and marine environments across the globe. Moreover, MPs in benthic sediments and surface water concern the food chain. Coastal settings and commercial seafood have been found to contain MPs. The massive presence of MPs in aquatic bodies has already created the issue of global food security and safety. MPs are passed between species at different food chain trophic levels by food consumption, which has a tremendous ecotoxicological effect. As a result, this chapter explores the widespread problem of MP pollution and how it affects the food chain. Moreover, this chapter clarifies how these tiny particles go from the ocean’s depths to the shore. This chapter will thoroughly analyze case studies and scientific literature to investigate MPs’ origins, distribution, and food web pathways from the marine environment to the coast. This chapter aims to improve our understanding of the complex interaction between MPs and the food web while highlighting the urgency of taking proactive measures to address this pressing environmental issue.
