Abstract

Herniotomy is a common surgical procedure for abdominal wall hernias, yet postoperative complications remain a concern in resource-limited settings. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Bangladesh from June to August 2024 among 217 purposively selected post-herniotomy patients. Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire and analyzed in SPSS with descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Early complications were reported in 30.0% of patients, most commonly pain (34.1%), infection (31.8%), and hematoma (25.3%). Late complications occurred in 13.4%, including recurrence (43.8%) and testicular atrophy (25.8%). Obesity was significantly associated with complications (p = 0.001). Despite these risks, prognosis was favorable in 94.9%. Findings highlight modifiable risk factors and emphasize improved perioperative care and follow-up strategies.
