Abstract

Online tourism has become a radical solution in expanding sustainable tourism, providing guests with rich experiences that keep the adverse effects on the environment to a minimum while connecting people worldwide. This chapter aims to establish how virtual travel contributes to enhancing the process of tourism, achieving lower levels of carbon emission and negative environmental impacts due to traditional tourism while promoting cultural exchange and support of destinations threatened by the vice of over-tourism. Using technologies like Virtual Reality, augmented reality, and 360-degree videos, tourists do not necessarily be at the destination physically to interact with a particular place. Additionally, it is an informative resource that promotes conservation and speaks of responsible tourism. This chapter posits that virtual travel can work hand in hand with conventional tourism to bring forward income to the destination while still keeping the environment and culture for the generation to come.
