Abstract

The handover of as-built BIM models is vital in ensuring seamless building operations post-construction. However, transitioning these models from construction to operation is often not straightforward and can face various challenges. Therefore, it is essential to understand the challenges that impact the success of this handover to improve the overall process. This study aims to identify the challenges for the successful handover of as-built Building Information Modeling (BIM) models for operation. To achieve this objective, the data collection involved individual interviews with industry professionals engaged in the built environment industry. Five themes emerged through thematic analysis: model issues, stakeholder, technical, organizational processes and end-user requirements. This study contributes to the current body of knowledge by identifying the challenges to the successful handover of as-built BIM models for operation. The lessons from this study could help industry professionals explore practical solutions and improve the handover process, making BIM models more effective in building operations.
